Launch a Shopify store beside Etsy, move your products, import reviews responsibly, and build owned social proof without losing customer trust.

Selling on Etsy? Launch a Shopify Store and Bring Your Reviews With You

The fastest path is not abandoning Etsy. Launch Shopify beside it, move your product catalog, and turn existing customer praise into owned social proof.

Your Etsy shop gives you marketplace discovery. Shopify gives you control over branding, customer relationships, checkout, email capture, and repeat sales. The critical task is preserving trust while you build that second channel.

Reviews matter because shoppers need evidence before buying from an unfamiliar store. Research from Northwestern's Spiegel Research Center found that products with five reviews had 270% greater purchase likelihood than products without reviews.

Here is the practical migration plan: set up Shopify, copy your catalog, map each Etsy review to the right product, publish credible proof, and keep Etsy active during the transition.

Launch Shopify beside Etsy and protect your existing sales

Do not close Etsy when Shopify goes live. Use Etsy for discovery while your independent store builds search visibility and repeat traffic.

Shopify handles your storefront, checkout, inventory, payments, shipping settings, and marketing integrations. You control the customer experience instead of accepting every marketplace limitation.

Start with a focused store rather than a perfect one. You can launch a small catalog in one weekend if your product information is ready.

A realistic first-pass schedule looks like this:

  1. Reserve two hours for account setup, payments, shipping, and tax settings.
  2. Reserve three hours for your best 10 to 20 products.
  3. Reserve two hours for your theme, navigation, policies, and domain.
  4. Reserve one hour for testing checkout on mobile and desktop.

You can start a Shopify store while keeping your Etsy shop open. The decision is simple: do this if repeat customers, branding, or email ownership matter. Skip this if you cannot maintain inventory accuracy across two channels.

Build the catalog once and save hours of manual entry

Your Etsy listings contain useful raw material. Product titles, descriptions, images, prices, variations, and inventory can become your Shopify catalog.

Shopify's official product import guide supports CSV uploads. The process runs through Products, Import, Add file, Upload and continue, then Import products.

Before exporting or rebuilding anything, create a clean product spreadsheet. Include these fields:

  • Product title and short description
  • Full product description
  • Price, SKU, and inventory quantity
  • Product type, vendor, and collections
  • Variant names and values
  • Image URLs
  • Search engine title and description
  • Etsy listing URL for your internal records

Shopify warns that CSV imports cannot be cancelled after they begin. Test five products first, then inspect images, variants, prices, and URLs.

Shopify's CSV documentation explains that image URLs can transfer product images from another platform. Confirm that every image loads before publishing.

Do this: rewrite titles for search and clarity. Etsy titles often repeat keywords because marketplace search rewards dense phrasing.

Skip this: copying every Etsy sentence without editing. Your Shopify product page needs a clear promise, product benefits, delivery details, and a direct next step.

Create a review inventory before you import anything

Etsy does not provide a simple native button that moves marketplace reviews into a new Shopify storefront. Treat the migration as a data and rights project, not a one-click transfer.

First, preserve your evidence. Export or record each review in a spreadsheet, then save screenshots where practical. Record the reviewer's displayed name, rating, date, text, photo, and original product.

Use a consistent internal structure:

FieldExample
Product handlelinen-apron-blue
Rating5
Review text“Soft fabric and accurate sizing.”
Display nameJamie R.
Review date2025-02-14
SourceEtsy
Media linkOriginal customer photo
Permission statusConfirmed, unclear, or declined

Do not imply that a Shopify buyer wrote the review. Label the source clearly, such as “Etsy customer review.” That small detail protects credibility.

Check Etsy's current Terms of Use and Privacy Policy before republishing names, photographs, or customer information. Platform terms and privacy rules can change.

If a review includes a full name, customer photograph, personal details, or a specific permission restriction, ask the customer before publishing it elsewhere. Keep the request short. Explain where the review will appear and how the customer will be identified.

Match Etsy reviews to Shopify products and avoid broken proof

Product matching creates the biggest migration risk. A review for one Etsy variation should not appear under a different Shopify product.

Build a product mapping sheet before importing reviews. Match the Etsy listing to the Shopify product handle, not only the product title.

This matters when you have renamed products, combined listings, changed materials, or created new product bundles. If the original item no longer exists, publish the review on a related page only when the buyer's experience remains relevant.

Do not merge reviews across materially different products. A review for a digital download should not support a physical product. A review for a small size should not automatically validate every size.

Keep the original review date. Older reviews can still establish product history, but they should not look like recent Shopify orders.

Your first import can take four to eight hours for 100 reviews. A careful product mapping process prevents weeks of customer confusion later.

Import reviews with the right Shopify app and reduce technical work

Shopify's App Store includes tools that import or display Etsy reviews. The Shopify collection for Etsy review apps currently lists options such as Reputon Etsy Reviews, Kudobuzz, and Reviews Importify.

Compare each app by import method, review ownership, Etsy connection requirements, display controls, pricing, and support. A free installation does not always mean free review imports or unlimited widgets.

Some apps sync reviews from Etsy. Others accept CSV files. A sync can save time, but it may depend on ongoing Etsy access or an app's API permissions. A CSV gives you more control, but requires careful formatting.

Ask five questions before installing:

  1. Can you import historical text and star ratings?
  2. Can you map reviews to Shopify product handles?
  3. Can you preserve dates, names, photos, and source labels?
  4. Can you export your review library later?
  5. Can you display reviews without slowing mobile pages?

Do this: test the app on one product with 10 reviews. Check the storefront, product page source, mobile layout, and checkout experience.

Skip this: installing three review apps at once. Duplicate widgets create conflicting stars, slower pages, and difficult troubleshooting.

Publish reviews where buying decisions happen

A review archive buried on one page will not help enough. Place proof beside the product decision.

Start with product pages. Show the average rating, review count, written comments, customer photos, and filters by rating or topic.

Add a compact rating summary near the product title. Add detailed reviews below the description. Display one or two strong excerpts near the add-to-cart button when your theme allows it.

Use your homepage for broader trust. Feature reviews that explain quality, fit, delivery, durability, or customer support. Use a “Read reviews from Etsy customers” label when appropriate.

A dedicated wall of love can support your brand story. It should not replace product-level proof. Shoppers need evidence about the exact item they are considering.

Northwestern's research found that the first five reviews often create the largest conversion impact. Prioritize products with zero or one review before polishing products with 100 reviews.

Do not hide every negative comment. The same research found that purchase likelihood often peaks around 4.0 to 4.7 stars, rather than a perfect five.

A realistic review profile feels more trustworthy. Publish honest feedback when it is relevant, accurate, and legally usable. Respond to legitimate concerns with specific improvements.

Turn imported praise into a repeatable review system

Imported reviews give Shopify a credible starting point. They do not replace collecting reviews from Shopify customers.

Create a post-purchase request sequence. Send the first request after the customer has received and used the product. Send one reminder five to seven days later.

Ask for useful detail instead of generic praise. Prompt customers with questions about fit, setup, materials, results, or the problem solved.

Use a branded form for text, photos, and video. Video responses can provide stronger creative material for product pages, email, paid ads, and social posts.

Webmonials can serve as a central home for this proof. You can import feedback from 30 or more sources, upload CSV files, collect video and text responses, and search transcripts by topic or sentiment.

The operational gain is simple. Your reviews stop living in Etsy, email threads, spreadsheets, and social posts. You can tag them once, then publish them through widgets, pop-ups, walls of love, or social-ready images.

Connect review collection to your email or CRM workflow when possible. A webhook or automation can trigger a request after delivery, subscription renewal, or customer support resolution.

Keep review marketing compliant and credible

The FTC's Consumer Reviews and Testimonials guidance says its rule took effect on October 21, 2024. It addresses fake reviews, deceptive testimonials, review suppression, and incentives tied to a particular sentiment.

Never edit a customer's words to create a stronger claim. You can shorten text for layout, but mark omissions responsibly and preserve the meaning.

Do not offer a reward for a five-star review. If you offer a reward for honest feedback, disclose the incentive and avoid suggesting a positive sentiment.

Do not call imported Etsy reviews “verified Shopify purchases.” That claim would mislead shoppers. Use “Etsy customer” or “review from our Etsy shop” instead.

Keep permission records for customer photos and videos. Remove content when a customer withdraws permission or when the product claim is no longer accurate.

These controls take minutes per review batch. They protect the asset you are trying to build: customer trust.

Measure the store migration with five numbers

Do not judge Shopify by revenue alone during the first month. Track the operating signals that explain performance.

Measure:

  • Product pages with at least five reviews
  • Review display rate on mobile product pages
  • Add-to-cart rate before and after review placement
  • Shopify email capture rate
  • Repeat purchase rate from identifiable customers

Use a baseline period of 30 days before changing multiple elements. Then test one variable, such as review placement, product copy, or a customer photo.

Northwestern's review research offers useful context, but your own data matters more. Traffic source, pricing, product quality, page speed, and shipping can change conversion rates.

Aim to give every important product five relevant reviews first. Then improve review freshness, media quality, and customer questions.

Make Shopify your owned channel without abandoning Etsy

Your Etsy store can keep generating discovery while Shopify becomes your customer relationship and brand hub. The winning move is not a dramatic migration. It is a controlled second channel with accurate products, clearly sourced reviews, and a reliable collection system.

Start with your best 10 products. Spend one weekend building the catalog, one day cleaning review data, and one week testing checkout and mobile pages.

Bring the proof you can document. Label its source. Ask for permission when needed. Then collect new Shopify feedback after every fulfilled order.

That approach turns Etsy's hard-earned trust into a durable asset you can use across your store, email, social content, and future sales channels.
